REGULATIONS
Ethylene oxide is a gas commonly used in hospitals to sterilize heat sensitive surgical equipment. ETO is regulated as an OSHA extremely hazardous compound with its own regulatory standard. This standard is found in section 1910.1047 of the Code of Federal Regulations. Employers are required to perform initial air sampling. However, since ETO is a colorless, odorless gas many employers choose to continue monitoring every six months.
ON-SITE ETO MONITORING:
ESP uses the latest instrumentation (MIRAN 1B infrared spectrophotometer) to perform on-site ETO evaluations. Unlike badges or pumps, this instrument provides immediate notification of leaks or excessive levels. However, upon request we can also perform sampling by badges or NIOSH/OSHA validated methods with personal sampling pumps.
